I am looking for a Stanley Lean who drowned at sea in 1930. Could you put me in the right direction please. He was on the HM tug St Genny.

I, too, have an ancestor who died on the St Genny tug. I have a copy of a postcard that was given to the family of those who perished - it's a bit blurred due to the scanning in process but if you would like to PM me your email address I will email you a copy of it. It has P.S. Lean listed at the top left hand side. There is also a photo of the tug in the middle of the card with further names of all crew who died that night.

Here's a bit of info I gleaned about that incident for my files:

"The tug St Genny (along with tug St Cyrus and sloop Snapdragon) had left Portland for Gibraltar on Saturday 11th Jan 1930. The next day there was a very bad storm which they were caught up in about 30 miles from Ushant. At 8.20pm on the 12th the storm worsened and the St Genny disappeared into the depths. Only 5 surviving men were pulled from the sea by those on St Cyrus (which had also been badly damaged) - sadly 28 men from the St Genny lost their lives."

There are lots of newspaper articles about it, too. (e.g. if you search the Times Online via the Gale website - they are doing a free trial period at the moment).

I assume that this is the correct man then......Phillip, not Stanley.

Sorry Sue and Lindsey in all the excitement I forgot to say thanks and yes this is the right man. His second name is Stanley never knew he was called Phillip but it is a family name.
