I have this family in 1881:

1881 England Census
about James Gaffee
Name: James Gaffee
Age: 34
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1847
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Amelia
Gender: Male
Where born: Bethnal Gn, Middlesex, England

Civil Parish: Bethnal Green
County/Island: London
Country: England

Street address: 4 Clarkson St
Condition as to marriage: Married
Education:

Employment status: View Image
Occupation: Frame Maker (C & S)

Registration district: Bethnal Green
Sub-registration district: Bethnal Church
ED, institution, or vessel: 14
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Amelia Gaffee 30
Amelia Gaffee 8
Caroline Gaffee 6
James Gaffee 34
James Gaffee 1

James (aged 1 here) died in 1883 and his mother Amelia (aged 30 here) died in 1889. This is the last time the family appears to be together.

I can not find the survivng family members in 1891 EXCEPT for the youngest daughter Sarah Gaffee who in 1891 and 1901 is living in Leicester with her Uncle William Chambers and family.

In 1901 James Gaffe (aged 34 in 1881) is a boarder in London without the surviving children.

Can anybody find this family in 1891? I have found a possible marriage for Amelia in 1898 to a Joseph Lane and them in 1901, but other than this I am stuck.

Thanks for any help given,

Vicky X

Thanks Claire, that is definitely him. The children are probably servants somewhere under the wrong name!

Thanks again,

Hi Patricia,

What sort of dates are you looking for?

There are 2 types available online:

The BMD (birth, marriage, death) indexes between 1837 – 1983 – This has only been transcribed up to about 1920 online, but you can view the documents later by trawling through each index. This gives the details if you need to buy certificates, but it only lists the spouses name or mother’s maiden name after 1912.

The complete BMD indexes between 1984 – 2005 – This is fully searchable by names

Try the following website for BMDs that have been computerised:

Freebmd.org.uk

There is also a thread at the top of this board with helpful tips for beginners.

If you struggle, put the details on here and we’ll try and help.

Good luck!

Thanks to everyone. That does like a marriage for Amelia, I think I will order that cert to be sure.
