Johnathon - it might be worth trying the local cemetary office. Cardiff (where i was looking) has a list of stillborns and was able to give me details of the plot they were buried in. It might be a better option if you aren't sure - depending on if your local cemetary charge for this service?

Have nudged a previous thread for you.
My Grandmother had a stillborn daughter but we don't know wether it was pre 1927 or if it met the required gestation. I have always thought that this baby deserves some recognition because it did exist.

Do remember though that the baby had to be of 28 week gestation for a stillborn certificate to be issued. Before 28 weeks all that was needed was a certificate of burial/cremation.

The stillbirth register only came into effect in 1927.

Yes, that is correct. my mum is still alive and they said it had to be my mum, they sent a form for my mum to fill in. it was quite easy to do, i then sent it off and i got the certificate shrtly afterwoods on behalf of my mum. (the stillborn was my sibling)

www.gro.gov.uk give this advice

Due to the sensitive nature of stillbirth registrations, the procedure for ordering a certificate of the entry differs from other types of certificates. We will only send out the application form after we have been contacted by phone or in writing by the mother or father (if he is named on the certificate). In cases where the parents are deceased, a brother or sister can apply if they can provide their parents’ dates of death.

The cost of the certificate is £7.

is there anyone out there that has any ideas on how to find records on a stillborn baby as they dont appear on the death or birth register this would be much appreciated thanks
