If your PC's dying, then copy all your vital personal files onto CDs/DVDs or a memory stick while it's still working. (If your hard drive isn't the problem, it is possible to reinstall your drive into another PC, but stick/disks are a lot easier.)

What to save: any documents, spreadsheets etc that you created; pics; music that you don't have the original CD for; email in/out files plus attachments; your genealogy downloaded/scanned images plus your tree; address book; favorites.

Thanks Ron,

I do have a computer friendly friend, but hoping it may be something I could fix before I rang him.

As it possibly the BIOS I'll give him a call

thanks again

Ron

The black screen is the boot up section where your PC gets it's insructions from the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) to start up.

The primary function of the BIOS is to identify and initiate component hardware (such as hard disk, floppy and disk drives). This is to prepare the machine so other software programs stored can load, execute, and assume control of the PC

The problem is something in the BIOS but don't ask me what it could be anything and unless you know what your doing you don't want to mess around in the BIOS.

any help please?

My computer at start up shows a black screen and freezes. I then have to press the reset button to get it going properly.

My daughter was on this morning and it turned itself off (think i may be on borrowed time here!)

I have ran the usual Virus scans and malware scans (both AVG) but nothing coming up. I have done a disk clean up, in fact had a good clean up but doesn't seem to have done the trick.
Something not quite right. Any ideas please?
