Born at Sea

Claire Report 22 Mar 2008 00:34

I was wondring if anyone could help me. My ggg grandfather was 'born at sea' and i don't know where to look for information about him.
His name was Richard Robinson Pryor, born 1822. On some census' it just says born at sea or high sea's, on one it says born in Calcutta and I believe that his birth was registered in Middlesex.
I know about his marriages and children, but how can I find out who his parents were? and where he was definately born?

I have no idea where to look
Thanks

Claire i think you will find the register is the nearest town to where the parents lived after being on the boat.
my mum was born on a boat on her way home from Ireland and she was registered in fulham where her parents lived ,

Claire,

If his birth occurred around 1822 his birth will not be registered as civil regiatration did not start until 1837.

You may be able to locate a baptism recorded somewhere. Have you checked familysearch.org
In view of the Calcutta clue it might be worth checking the FIBIS website. www.fibis.org/

If he married in England or Wales after 1837 his marriage certificate will give the name of his father.
