I live in Denmark where everyone is given an ID number at birth (or when they become resident in the country) and I think it's the same in Norway. The problem is that I can't tell you when this system was introduced, as you say your G.Grandfather was born between 1846 - 1851. If you are lucky enough that he did have an ID nr., then you can trace all his movements in Norway.

I would suggest that you contact the Norwegian Embassy in Britain (they probably represent the whole of Scandinavia) and ask them how you can trace birth details on your ancestors.

Hi my name is Harry Dahl,
I'm trying to find information on my Great Grandfather Abert Dahl born 1846 -1851 Norway, he became British citizen, died May 1903 South Shields England. He married Margaret Riggs from North Shields 1880 and had 8 children, Albert, Margaret,Richard,Elizabeth,Robert,Wilhelmena,Beatrice and Mary all born in South Shields. My Grandfather was Richard married to Ellen Softley they had four children Florence,Patricia,Dorothy and Thomas. My Father was Thomas born 1912 married to Catherine Callaghan born 1914.
Is there anyone out there able to help find any information on the birth place of my Great Grandfather and any other family members in Norway as I haven't been able to go any further with my research. If you can help it will be greatly appreciated. Regards Harry
