Thanks for all that information everyone. I won't spend time trying to delete them anymore. I was only trying to tidy things up anyway.
I have to say that since I started this last March I have had some good results with the hot matches but most are totally irrelevent.

I think the software for the hot matches treats the surname and the date of birth as exactly correct and the place of birth as irrelevant (!)

- mind you, you'd think that the tree match software would operate the same rules ??

I was contacted yesterday by someone descended from my g g grandma's sister. She has been searching for information for some time, and tried clicking on the tree in the name box on the off chance.

How come this ancestor or her husband (he has been on my tree for some time) have never came up as a Hot Match for either of us?

Hi

I must admit that although I do check my hotmatches I only look at those where I have had no contact with the owner. It only takes about a quarter of an hour but it has definitely been worth it.

Chica, don't give up hope on the hot matches. I have been here just over two years and never had any really good matches. Then I got a message on Wednesday from someone who got my great grandfather in his matches. Through this person I now have a newspaper cutting of a photo of my great grandad plus his obituary for being killed in WW1. It really made my day as my family have nothing of my ancestors.

I sort mine by "most" which comes up with a list of the most matches - then just look at the ones with more than 1 match. Then I ignore the rest. They are mostly Abbotts anyway (not from Northampton which is where I want them from) so I'm not worried about them.

Irene

You can't get rid of your ignored ones completely , so thats why your current ones are growing.....Say like you are in your hotmatches you discard all the ticked one so they go into your ignored one, then you go into your ignored one and they are all ticked, so you click to discard them, but what has happed is they all go back into you currents ones..i do hope thats made sense

I recently started doing hot matches from last to first, it seems easier not to lose your place.

Thanks everyone
maybe I will just leave them there. I just thought I should get rid of the ones that don't match to save clogging up the system. I have spent several hours today trying to get rid of them with no much luck. In future I will take a look and not bother trying to delete.

That was happening to me and I thought I was doing the delete wrong somehow, I was spending hours going through them all. In all the time I´ve been on GR I´ve never had even ONE matching hot match tho I have 900 names on my tree. Now I´ve decided life is too short to search thru 5 pages of one name etc. and now I don´t bother with them at all. I even have time now for "proper" research!

Thanks Lindsey

I am happy to have hot matches sent. It's just getting rid of them after they've been checked. I seem to be going round in circles.

Are you clicking on save after youve ticked the delete box?

Lindsey* Report 8 Mar 2008 22:24

if you dont want a match just put a * after the surname the gr machine cant cope with it so ignores!

You cant empty ignored matches but they dont take any room on your computer

I seem to be in some sort of loop. Am I the only one? I am trying to delete unwanted hot matches but they seem to keep coming around again. In fact, as I delete from my ignored matches the number of pages in my current matches is growing. How do I get out of it? Help please I'm exhausted!!
