Thankyou Mary I have added to the thread.

The ancestors I am looking for were father and son both born in Exeter and teaching in the same area.

Will have a scout about see what I can find.

Thanks again

If you know where he lived as a child/young man you could try contacting the local County Council (or Unitary Authority).

When a school closes the records - including roll details - should be lodged with the Records office at the County Council. If the school is not closed then the school may still have the records.

If you have an address for him you should be able to work out which schools are local to him and narrow it down a bit. The Council ought to know when the schools were built so you could eliminate the "newer" ones.

So, try the records office.

Try and find a list of local schools.

Contact the Education property department at the council who could help with info on the age of the schools.

A schoolmaster wouldn't necessarily have gone to university. I don't think any of my teachers in that period did.

Somebody on here was offering look-ups for teachers ages ago - not sure if the offer's still open, but you could try searching in the Advanced Search box.

Do any of you know how I would go about finding out what school an ancestor went to?

He went on to be a school master so wish to find which university he went to also what schools he taught in.

This would of been late 1800's up until around 1930.

Thanks
