I've just found your input to my query - sorry for not being more attentive.

Thanks for your advice - I think I'll try the West Lothian Archives - you never know! but again knowing my luck, they probably won't have anything.

There will be burial records for most cemeteries which are either kept at individual sites or by the local council. For West Calder try sending an initial enquiry to West Lothian Archives at [email protected]. With regard to Thomas McGerry he is probably buried in the closest burial ground to where he died. Try contacting Edinburgh City Archives on 0131 529 4616. As Heather says the Scottish Genealogy Society is also an excellent source of info and I think most MIs in Edinburgh have been transcribed. I would also agree with Alistair that a grave stone for a working man would be an exception and a wooden marker was probably all that marked most graves.I've lost count of the number of burial grounds I have walked around and found absolutely nothing for this very reason but you never find out if you don't try so don't be put off by my negativity.

Thanks for your offer and here are two of the gentlemen I am looking for:

THOMAS McGARRY/McGERRY, born 1828-1831 in Ireland and died 25.02.1892 in Edinburgh.

THOMAS MEEK, born 12.11.1814 in Torphichan, W.Lothian, Scotland and died 08.10.1853 in West Calder, Midlothian.

However, if, as you say, they were poor, would they be registered where they were buried ?

Do you have to be a member of the SGS or the LFS to be able to view any finds ?

Hello Elaine -Google Memorial inscriptions for area of death to see if any have been transscribed-also try Scottish Genealogy Society and Local Family history Society to see if they have transcribed grave stones-Heather

Firstly, remember that gravestones were the exception, rather than the rule.....only moderately well-off families could afford these.

I have a couple of books listing gravestones in Leith and the area around the north-east of Edinburgh, if you want to let me have some names to look for.

I've hit a "fire wall" with a few of my ancestors, therefore, I would like to try and find their gravestones - they might give me some kind of a hint as to where to go to next !? I know their DOB, DOD and where.

Can anyone inform me of a website (preferable FREE) or where I can find this information ?

I live in Denmark and visit Scotland on a regular basis, but it would be great to find out the actual cemetery they are buried in before visiting Scotland. I don't normally have too much time when I'm there.
