Help finding a marriage please...

Hello all,

I'm trying to find the marriage William Rushton (born 1814) to Mary Luick (born abt 1819). Her surname is unusual so may have been mis-transcribed or mis-spelt. Both were from Liverpool so probably would have married there.

Their first child was born in 1843, so I'd expect the wedding to be a year or two before.

Thanks,
Andy

Ah, just realised she is Mary not Alice. but surname is similar !

However it is the only William Rushton married in Liverpool between 1843 and 1853

That is an interesting find and could be Luick misspelt as Buck, I'm sure they were married prior to the children being born though, wouldn't it have beenhighly unusual to co-habit back then?

There's this one. The image looks like Quirk but I wonder whether it may have been an original mistranscription - if the writing on the certificate was not particularly clear at the time the index was drawn up ...

Andy, no it was not unusual, there were more "out of wedlock" births than we may think.

It wasn't that unusual to get married after the first child was born - at least it showed promise of fertility and in some cases that mattered.

Andy, have you got record of him in 1851 census ?

LD

Do you know William's parents names ?

Andy

Andy Report 5 Mar 2008 13:11

I have, by then he and Mary were living in Wetherall, Cumberland where they'd moved to find work.

William's parents were Thomas & Lydia Rushton

here they are on 1861, looks like their first child was born 1843, so maybe a marriage before then

Just had another look and that marriage to Mary Kik shows up on IGI. That's a likely mishearing/mistranscription.

Thanks ladies, it looks a real possibility. I'll get the certificate ordered and take a close look at the surname.
