Thank you ALL for your help.
I am now up and running on FTM 2008, the format is different from GR but I will get used to it. One thing though I will still be spending loads of time on GR?
Where on this earth for a few quid, can you get such wonderfull people who like to help newbies like me.
Thanks again Roger

Hi Roger, sorry I was out - how is it going? Ron is the oracle on all things family tree program :) so Im sure he will help if we all get into a pickle, but I think you must be virtually sorted by now. Have you backed up the ftm to disc and internet yet?

You can upload your info to ancestry from the FTM2008 and have your own sort of family home page on there, so dont going buying more programs now - just get used to this one - let us know how you are doing - have you registered it - you will need to do that to have access to some of the facilities on it.

Oh, did you go back and change your security settings on Outlook Express after you finished downloading your gedcom?

Hi Roger

I just had an email from a relative in the USA who told me about your problem - I was the same - in fact I totally lost my GR tree but had an earlier Gedcom on my computer so I just imported that and I was away again - I was told to get the 2006 version of FTM and ordered it but before it arrived she then told me to get the 2008 version and I have just this last hour loaded it and imported my Gedcom from GR and all is fine, it is brilliant and so so easy, believe me just try it.
Regards,
Margaret

I keep a back up of my home FT on a USB memory stick. It takes just seconds to keep up to date.

In Outlook Exprees, go to Tools, Options, Security.

You have a tick in the box that says "do not allow attachments to be saved that could be a virus"

Take the tick out of the box. Click Apply then OK. You can then save the attachment to your hard drive.

Well, I prefer 2006 for its homepage facility but now you have the newest one, I guess you wont miss what you never had. I have 2008 but havent used it because I didnt like it as much.

I should think all the other instructions above are valid apart from the home page creation. Be brave, you can do it.

Thanks Claire & Heather
Sounds easy "hm"?
I have loaded it on computer, but major problem, it is 2008 version, n it was a pressie. Would it pay to obtain 2006.
Thanks Roger

Have you load FTM yet?

Heather

You have to request your ged com from GR - they will send it in an attachment to your email address, you then import that into your family tree maker program. You cant "lose" it, it doesnt take all your info from here, it just copies it and sends you a file with it in. Your original stuff stays on here.

First of all put your family tree maker program on your computer and register it and then wait for the gedcom file to be sent to you from GR. When you get the gedcom file right click on it and save to desktop so that you can see clearly where it is. Then go to your family tree maker and import the gedcom into it - probably by browsing from family tree maker - to the desktop.

It sounds much harder than it is :)

Once you have it all fitted into your ftm program - do a back up disc by clicking on file, back up and then choose cd.

Afterwards do the same but choose back up to internet - so you also have it saved in cyber space (you usually get 6 months or something free of that storage then pay about a fiver a year for it - believe me, well worth it! - its much more likely you will click on the internet back up when you add more info than you will back up to your cd every time)

Then click on internet tab and go down to create home page - click on that and just follow the instructions through to get your own free homepage that you can invite friends or rellies to see from their computers.

You will then have your info stored in 5 different places - GR, FTM on your puter, FTM on disc, in internet storage and on a homepage - all the ftm stuff can be updated just by a click on the tab there, including updating your home page.

Of course all the above relates to FTM2006 version, the 2008 doesnt have the home page facility now as ancestry is encouraging people to upload their trees to the ancestry site.
