Hello

Can anybody assist me with advice re the following. . .

I know for a fact (from my grandad who recently died) and from the 1901 census that the following is correct. .

In 1901 my great grandparents lived at 11 East Street, Stapleford, Nottingham. Details are. .

John Mason 27yrs born Worcesters Woodside
Hannah Mason (formally Blunt) 29 yrs born Worcesters Woodside
Nelly Mason 3 yrs
Hannah Mason 1 yrs

I've discovered a wedding cert dated 25/05/1896 for
John Mason 23yrs and Hannah Blunt 24yrs in County of Dudley

All the dates / ages add up as right, but how can I be sure that the wedding cert relates to my grandparents?

If this is the case then I've found a tree to go along with the wedding cert John Mason and Hannah Blunt that goes back to the 1700's so this would be great if I could be sure

Any advice as not been doing this for very long. .

thanks

Andy

Well thats a pleasant change, yesterday we had a twerp who wanted to grab a tree by pushing buttons.! You must check every detail before adding anyone, use it as a guideline by all means and how nice if it is yours too.! Have you got their cert, if not order it to be double sure.

You could check the 1891 census and see if there's a Hannah Blunt that matches the details of Hannah Mason in 1901.
There is one, Hannah Blunt age 19, living in Dudley, municipal ward Woodside. Says she's born Dudley but I guess Woodside would be the same. She's the daughter of Joseph & Hannah. An added benefit is that there's a grandfather Joseph Blunt with the family.

If you have Nelly's birth certificate or marriage certificate, you could use that as a way to double-check it is the right one. If she married, it will usually mention her father's name and occupation, and her birth certificate will give you her parents' names (including mother's maiden name) which will give you checking points to get further back.

Andy,

How many Mason/Blunt marriages are there with the relevant first name? It looks as if the details for this certificate are very likely to be relevant to your family. What does it say on the marriage certificate for addresses of the bride and groom. Also, you must have the father's names on this certificate, can you not check them on the census to confirm.

Lindsay is quite right though just because this part of someone else's tree is correct does not mean the rest of the tree going back to 1700 is! You need to do your own researching or at least ask for certificated confirmation of the ancestors going back.

Lindsey - I've got the wedding cert for John and Hannah and their ages add up to the ages of my great grandparents on the 1901 census. I know that they were also from this area - so it looks about right. Any other tips

Jane - this looks about right too - will do some more checks on this

thanks both

Margaret

Per my 1901 census (which I know is them) they were both born in woodside so this looks even better. per the wedding cert - the father of Hannah was also called Joseph Blunt. . . .

good stuff . . .will keep digging, but looking pretty good perhaps ??

thanks

How about the witnesses do they tally ?

I assume these are your grandfather's parents?

What does his birth cert say re his parents? Does he have any siblings? Do their dates tally with the marriage and location?

It all sounds pretty good but you need to go backwards bit by bit - it's easy to go wrong if you try and leap a generation.

Thanks for help

My grandad (Harold Mason) was born 22/11/1911 and his parents were John Mason and Hannah Mason (formally Blunt) He was born at 11 East St Stapleford, Nottinghamshire - but both parents were born in Worcester - Woodside (as per the 1901 census)

Re the wedding cert that I've got for a John and Hannah married 25/05/1896 . . witnesses Joseph and Sarah Granger ?. . .

Obviously need to keep digging. . would be interesting to see Nellie and Hannah's birth cert who were definately his sisters re the 1901 census. he often talked about them and only died recently (should have asked him more. . . .0

thanks both

Was your grandfather the youngest or were there any children born later than him?

I'm looking on FreeBMD for surname Mason and mmn Blunt - but only found this one - which looks like your grandad:

Births Dec 1911 (>99%)
Mason Harold Blunt Shardlow 7b 1009

It's worth checking back though as they add more records - you might find one or two later ones.

Hannah?

Births Mar 1900 (>99%)
Mason Hannah Shardlow 7b 552

assuming they were born in the same place that is.

The reason witnesses could be another tick is if they are in-laws , sister/husband etc,

Jill - that is my grandad - I have his cert. He was the youngest. He had a number of brothers and sisters. The only ones I now for sure and have an approx year of birth is Hannah and Nellie (taken fomr the 1901 census)
You look right re Hannah as well. . . .I will send up for this. .
Any more good ideas ?

thanks for help so far

Fanfare of trumpets please!

It looks then as if Hannah and Nellie were born in the same area so one of their certs will give you parents' names - and they should match your grandad's - and hey you're getting there!

Good luck.

Births Jun 1898 (>99%)
Mason Nellie Shardlow 7b 506
