I strongly suspect that they were not legally married.

I found a marriage in Essex for a Walter Mann but earlier. If it were my family I'd be working on the theory that he was actually married to someone else but separated. I think Sarah Matilda/Matilda Sarah was quite a bit younger than he was.

Only one birth for that combination of names:

Name: Matilda Sarah Diggins
Year of Registration: 1885
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Mile End Old Town
County: London, Middlesex
Volume: 1c
Page: 505

[looks too young though]

Free BMD have not yet transcribed all deaths up to 1923, but still worth a try. Searching on Ancestry in the Free BMD for Walter Mann born between say 1843 and 1883 for a death in England and Wales between say 1899 and 1939 comes up with 23 possibilities, all before 1918.

One of these is a Walter Harry Mann who died in Sussex:

Name: Walter Harry Mann
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1867
Year of Registration: 1907
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Age at Death: 40
District: Steyning
County: Sussex
Volume: 2b
Page: 180

- perhaps worth checking - if only to rule this one out (since he may have died outside E&W but not on naval service)?

Is the statement that he was dead before 1923 based on the son's marriage cert info?

Do you have the marriage cert for Walter and Sarah? When did they marry?

Would he be the Cecil Henry Mann born 1902, Tendring, Essex?

Im looking for someone for a friend and i cant find any trace of them

its a Walter Henry Mann, all we know is that he was married to a Sarah Matilda Diggins, he was dead before 1923. They had a son Cecil Henry Mann c 1901. He was a Leading Stoker in the Royal Navy.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Ive looked on the nay records on National Archives site and can only find Walter Mann (no middle name) but i think they would be too old.
