Thanks All, sorry it has taken me so long to reply, been hving computer problems. I see the difference now betwween a charwoman and a servant.

A servant would probably do more of a range of activities for their boss - not just cleaning but errands and pretty much anything else they wanted them to do!

Charwoman A woman hired by the day to do odd jobs, usually cleaning, in a house - as still used today and in use as early as 1596. The word "chare" or "char" was used to describe an odd job

In the 1851 census I have a Jane aged 22, occupation: Charwoman and her sister Emma aged 17, occupation Servant. Both Jane and Emma are listed as living at the same address as their parents and brothers. I know at that time there were servants that "lived out" but what is the difference between a charwoman and a servant?
