HOW TO USE MARRIAGE INDEX?

Probably a stupid question.

Is there an easier way to find out which person married who other than using the census to try to piece things together.

Hope so.

HI Jen, will nudge my thread with info on for you.
Usually, unless after 1912, the only way is to check the census, but again after 1911, you can look for births of children using mothers maiden names to check.

Not on the earlier marriage indexes, other than looking at the following census year or buying the certificate.

I'm not sure but I think the Family Relatives site may match up marriage partners (but I can't be sure as Ive never used the site which is a pay site).

If you use http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl , enter the name of one spouse and the date range you're interested in, plus the county if you know it.

If you find a result that looks like the one you want, click on the page number, and you'll get a list of all the people listed on the same page of the register.

There'll usually be 4 of them (2 men and 2 women), and you can then use the census to work out who married who.

If the county you're interested in is covered by http://www.ukbmd.org.uk , the index should match the partners.
