Hi Jen,
Read good things about www.familytreeforum.co.uk this morning in my December issue of Derbyshire Family History Society Journal. I think I will sign up. Thanks for the tip, I may not have thought anything of it otherwise.

Perhaps it started as a security issue Joy, and was never dropped.

It is odd that one cannot add links to sites. In other sites that I visit, one can click on the link to another site.

Eh? (Puzzled). Oh forget it.

Like your signature though, very creative :)

Hello again John... I thought you didn't have the time to do your own research, and wanted someone who didn't cost an arm and a leg to do it for you? I refer to your threads on Chat and General, of course.

Not the sort of thing a serious researcher with their own blog/website would put on a geneology forum if he/she wanted everyone to take them seriously, I imagine...

And Reggie is actually extremely helpful, and gives very generously of his time to help others in their research... as do many people on GR.

Hi Paul,
That's a bit paranoid of them don't you think? Ancestry are working on allowing people to make links into their pages. I imagine unscrupulous types wouldn't be willing to pay a subscription in order to post links to porn sites etc., on here. So what's the prob?

By the way, I certaily don't hold up Ancestry as a shining example for genealogy sites to follow. I'm quite happy with GR really.

Hi John,
I contacted GR recently (about 2 weeks ago) about placing a message with a pointer to an URL and asked if it was acceptable. In reply the answer was very polite but stated "no it was not allowed".

Hi Ron, I didn't see the sig file thing anywhere. Often when you're registered with a site teh 'My Profile' section allows you to attach a site link to your signature. I presume you mean that. I looked a few times for this on GR and haven't spotted it. Maybe I need to look again? Thanks.

Reggie, you're being quite unhelpful.

What could be more public than GR?

If you aren't happy with the site................

Ron

Ron Report 18 Feb 2008 17:14

GR do allow you to put a website URL in a signature file which is what we do when posting or answering posts on GR, sig files are accepted on most sites including all rootsweb mailing lists and forums. Sig files are not looked upon as blatent advertising.

What is not acceptable is a blatent self advert for your own website such as "Vist my site for this and that".

It is accepted practise for someone else to recommend a website and put that URL in a post, such as, I can recommend this website/company for this and that".

It is frowned upon though to post such a post when you place the advert yourself and pretend to be somebody else.

With a sig file it's up to the reader if they cut and paste it to look at that website.

Ah, so you don't have any other sites relating to your research. I have a blog-based site that I'm developing in order to attract other researchers with the same interests. Non-commercial - just an effort to publish everything I find AND get discussion and comment going. Basically I want it to build collaboratively. I get quite muddled keeping track of the amount of email correspondence that I have. This way messages/thoughts/theories/findings will be public and organised.

Whose websites are you promoting here?

Reg

John

John Report 18 Feb 2008 14:17

The problem Reg is that - it won't help drive traffic to our own websites via Google etc.

Devon Dweller Report 18 Feb 2008 12:46

It's only a recent thing that we can add that much without the aid of ( and ) to seperate it.

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 18 Feb 2008 12:18

I don't see the problem...........copy & paste is a perfectly acceptable function, and not beyond the capabilities of most computer users.

As for your being a registered approved user, I have to disagree.

You are, like all of us, merely a member - having paid an annual subscription.

John

John Report 18 Feb 2008 12:12

Really? Is that because they don't want unscrupulous types putting links to their questionable sites? It's a pity as it'll help drive traffic to our own websites: which is important in the grand scheme of what we're all trying to do - isn't it? Besides, we're registered, approved users.

No it won't link....anyone wishing to access will have to copy & paste.

Hello,
Is it possible to add a link to my genealogy website in these posts? I tried using html which shows correctly in the 'Preview' of the post, but in the submitted version it just shows as:

http://www.johniwhite.com/family - and doesn't actually link. Just static text.

It's not disallowed here is it? I read the 'guidelines for message board use' but it reccommends not putting in links and email addresses etc., purely for ones own protection/privacy.

Thanks everyone,
John
