What a horrid thing to do to a little child Patricia - I was taken from my mother and adopted at two myself, the lost feeling never goes.
If you think it was in the area where she was born i.e. Devonport, I would try the local libraries or see if there is a History Society or County Records Office. Any one of these would probably have some knowledge of local orphanages. Also the Churches in the area might have one, especially if there is a Catholic church. Also try putting your query on the Records board here. Some of the people have amazing access to information and are always willing to share and help.
Good luck
Eileen

Patricia,

Do you have the name of the orphanage?
