hi all

I am trying to search for my grandfather. I only have his name John William Walker and an approx birth date of 1911/12/13. I know that he had a sister called Margaret and she married a man called Tom Tomlinson. In order to find out more about him I thought that i would try to find his sisters marriage certificate etc.I have been searching all marriage records from 1925 to 1945 but cannot find an entry. I have no idea when margaret was born or married so am purely basing my search dates on an estimate etc. If there is a better way of searching please can you let me know, i have been looking on ancestry.

As a sister Margaret could be 20 years older than your grandfather, so I`d be inclined to search from 1905 onwards for her marriage. Iv`e looked on freeBMD, and there are about 10 Thomas Tomlinson marriages to a Margaret between 1900 and 1925, but none of them to a Walker, I don`t have an Ancestry subscription anymore, but theres plenty on here who do... so maybe someone can help you with this search. If you had an idea of the area your Grandfather came from it may help narrow it down a bit.

Good luck

Nicky

Just did a birth search for John William Walker on freeBMD between 1910 and 1914......it bought up 9 births ranging from Gateshead down to Marylebone, the problem being unless you know his parents names and/or mothers maiden name, you wouldn`t know if you had the correct certificate if you were to order it, with out more details I think this is going to be a tough one.

But dont you know gran's name? Your parents birth cert would give both their names and where they were living. You could then look for their marriage.

Unfortunaltly I have no other information. My dads parents were not married and my dad never knew his father. So what I have written earlier is all I have to go on!

Can you give us a few more details from your dad's birth certificate, place, date, fathers name and profession, mothers details etc.

Thanks,

Selena

I was hoping that a marriage certificate may give an address so from that I would make an assumption, possibly a bad one!, of the area of the country in which my grandfather was born and hence this would I hope narrow down my search for a birth certificate. Grasping at straws I think?!!

Selena

My dad was born on Egypt on 15 November 1939. His name is Neville John. His mum is Beryl Doris Hart. There is nothing in the space for his dad as this is the person that I am trying to find out more about. He was born in Egypt as his mothers dad was in the forces at the time.

Island

I know my grandfathers name from my dad who tried to search for him many many years ago. This info and that which I wrote above was provided by his mum (Beryl Doris Hart). It is thought but not confirmed that John Walker died some years ago

Do you have any idea where in the UK John Walker might have come from?

Did Margaret marry aboard?

Im sorry, but it really would help if you gave ALL you knew in the first box, like the Egypt birth etc.

When your dad was looking into this years ago, did he not have an area where grandad would have come from? Id have thought its the sort of thing his mum would have known and said to him?

It would seem likely the father would also be in the military. I am just wondering if your grandfathers army record would mention anything about his daughter giving birth unmarried - as it was much rarer then and may have caused quite a kerfuffel in the barracks?

Thats why I wondered if there would be a mention in the grandfathers records of any erm, incidents, Island!
