Yes Maureen, you were lucky! If everything was indexed there, it would be a lot easier, but they have so much, there's no chance of that, unfortunately!

If you have the exact reference you can order them, but if they haven't been indexed, like Royal Marine records, then you can't. So Army records can be ordered for those discharged before 1855 and WW1 officers for example, but not for any other ranks say 1855-1913.

Yes, the records would be at National Archives. Not online though, you'd have to go there or get someone to go for you.

I have a couple of queries about some Royal Marines in my tree. Surname Bright.

Between 1860 and 1885 might their families have travelled abroad with them? I know army familes sometimes did.

Is there anywhere I can do a search on Royal Marines (not officers) serving during the 1800's?

I can find no BMD's or census for the above dates relating to my branch of Bright's who came from the Plymouth area.
Grateful for any advice. Thanks, Floss.
