Hello, Please can someone point me in the right direction, I use Family Tree Maker Prog on my Desk Computer.....I have just bought myself a LAPTOP for when we are away from home, what I would like to know is how do I update my information to .........my Laptop from Desk Computer....I am stuck with this. I tried saving to a flash drive from Desk Computer it saying can't save onto Flash Drive....would I have to send a Gedcom then open it & delete the other prog....I do use a CD to backup my work....or would I use that & restore.

Just drag and drop Your FTM data file onto the Flash drive.

You will also need to install FTM onto your Laptop. Then drag and drop back from the flash drive to the laptops hard disc.

I would create a folder on each pc in My Documents to hold your data files so that you don't forget where they are. First time you open the file you will need to tell FTM where it is. After that it remembers the last used location.

FTM data files will have the extension .FTW and backup files .FKB

Hello Peter, I seem to have a problem I have put the family Tree Prog on the Flash Drive it opens ok both on Desk PC & Laptop but the latest info I have on desk one I can't seem to get it transfered onto Flashdrive.

It is just the data file you are trying to put onto the flash drive isn't it, not the complete FTM program?

Yes Sam, but I'm not sure how to do it it won't seem to backup to FLashdrive.

You should just be able to drag and drop or copy and paste it onto the flash drive. Are you getting error messages and if so, what do they say?

Have you tried emailing your gedcom to yourself and picking it up on yopur laptop?

The FTM programme will need to be installed on the laptop directly from the original programme disc, if the laptop uses Vista then you will also have to download the vista patch from the FTM helpcentre too.



Family Tree Maker treats a Zip or Jazz (or other type of removable media) disk like a floppy disk. If it sees that there is any sort of data on the disk, it will not allow you to backup your file to the removable disk because it thinks you may overwrite a backup for some other family file. Most new Zip disks come with a "Read me" file, which may fool Family Tree Maker into thinking there is data on the disk.
The best way to backup to a Zip disk is to use the backup command in Family Tree Maker and specify a custom location to make the backup in. Here's how to do this:

Create a new folder or directory on the Zip disk. The new folder will be where you save your backup file.

To create a new folder:
Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop (for Windows XP users it may also be under the Start menu).
Double-click on the icon for your Zip drive to open the disk.

Click on the File menu, select New, then Folder. <br)A new folder will be created. The new folder will be given the default name of "New Folder" which you can change to something a little more meaningful like "Backup" or "FTM Backup".

Type in the new name and press the Enter key on your keyboard when finished to accept the new name.
