hi everyone.

my grandmother say she thinks her father had a brother named wid. all siblings were born in same district so have been trawling to see if something jumps out at me but so far no luck.

does anyone have any ideas on what Wid could be?
thanks.

Could it have been a shortened form of a surname.

Some people are given a surname as a first name

What area were they all from?
I had an Uncle Wyndham (from S Wales) and he was sometimes referred to as Wyd.

I just did an experiment on Ancestry birth indexes. In the search facilty I typed in Wid* for the forename and nothing else.

What an array of names begining with Wid I found! Never heard of most of them before - here's a sample:

Widnum
Widdison
Widdup
Widmore

Loads more on there if you want to have a check.

Regards, Athena

Could it be short for Wilfred? Is your Wid. on the 1901 census?

There is a Wilfred born Chertsey 1897 on Freebmd

Still having a look.

no. he's not on 1901. just George A and Charles T with parents Thomas and Emily.

(although Charles may be down as Thomas.)

they were the eldest two.
