Many folks have posted that they got caught out by the Malware attacks coming from GR.

Please add your recommendations for
Anti-virus software
Malware protection and removal

Please *do not* add discussion about someone's recommendation - that only confuses. If you must discuss it - start a new thread.

My contribution is
Norton 360 (approx £55 for 3 PCs with a years updates)
No fuss solution - run it and forget it.
or
Norton Antivirus 2008 (approx £38 for 3 PCs with a years updates)
Grown-up version without the extras in 360

If you've bought any Symantec / Norton product you can get the Upgrade edition and save a bit.

For Malrware/Spyware removal I use Ad-Aware 2007 (free), and Spy-Bot Search and Destroy again free.

Spybot available here :-
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
Ad-Aware here:-
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Anti Virus I use and recommend AVG Free. Updates daily free.
Available here:- http://free.grisoft.com/

AVG also do an anti spyware product free as well, but not used it, available at the same address.

McAfee Site advisor.

There is a free version which can also be upgraded to plus version for a small fee and you can set in protected mode so you cannot be redirected to unsafe sites.

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security
www.trendmicro.com

about $70 AUD (per year) and well worth it
Have used it for 5 years and never had any intruders.
It stops everything in its tracks, even the GR and FR trojan everyone's been experiencing.

Hi Joy, forgot to mention the Zone Alarm firewall as well for free. Better than the inbuild windows one.

Ad-Aware 2007
Spybot Search and Destroy
AVG Anti-Spyware
Spyware Guard
SUPER Anti Spyware

Antiviir Personal Edition
avast! Antivirus
AVG 7.5

I also run CCleaner at least once a day to clean out temp files and unwanted cookies. Firefox is my default browser and I also have Windows Defender. Router firewall is also enabled.

So far, I have not had any problems.

Hello, Keith in the sunshine.
The computer has the firewall built-in, and have just remembered there is SpywareBlaster. Just wondering if all these anti spy ones are needed?

I have Kaspersky internet Security version 7

it seems to be doing the trick... I don't have anything else, as this is supposed to have everything I need...... so far, so good... but I am wondering if I need to do that CCleaner every so often???

As a minimum you need an Anti-Spyware program, and and Anti-Virus one (the two are NOT the same)

It is also a good idea to have Windows Defender and a firewall installed.

CCleaner is handy as it can clear out temp files and cookies at the click of a button. There are also options in it to keep the cookies you want, say for your trusted sites.

Always make sure your copy of Windows is fully up to date with the latest security fixes. Many attacks prey on security flaws in un-updated machines.

I use Zone Alarm, Spybot Search and Destroy and AdAware (all free)

I have AVG Internet Security Home Edition, includes Anti virus, Anti Spy, anti Spam and firewall. aprox £70 for 3 computers for 2 years. (I am not using the firewall and anti spam on this computer) Checks for updates every hour.
Spybot search and destroy
Ad Aware SE fully updated not tried the 2007 version yet.
Spyware Blaster
Sunbelt Kerio Firewall
CCleaner to get rid of all those temp files
Mailwasher as my anti spam, nothing is downloaded onto my computer unless I know who it is from.
Firefox as my default browser

All programs are fully updated and run regularly. AVG runs several times a week at night as it can be set to shut down automatically after scanning.

Something else I use to keep an eye on things is HijackThis, now owned by Trend Micro. It shows a log of your registry, mainly used for techies to help clean up the computer after malware attacks.

My downloads usually come from Download.com

I never saw that Trojan once but maybe it's because I can't see adverts?

I have Norton and use both IE and Firefox. Like them both for different reasons. Both browsers have inbuilt pop up stoppers enabled.

I also use:

Spywareblaster
Adaware 2007
Spybot Search and Destroy
McAfee Site Advisor
CCleaner
Mailwasher

Plus I have IE7 set up to block third party cookies.

Joyce, you can switch off the option for AVG to scan every time you switch the computer on. If you are finding a trojan everyday, is it the same one, is it related to the one on Genes? You could have malware on your computer causing this. Ad aware and spybot are not anti virus and won't conflict with the AVG, neither are they real time.

Dwonload.com is safe to get downloads from.

Horatia Report 4 Feb 2008 22:57

Margaret,

CCleaner gets rid of all the old rubbish on your PC. It prevents your PC getting slow due to rubbish build up.

You have to set it up correctly or it may delete stuff you don't want deleted.

If you want it download it from here:

http://www.ccleaner.com/
