If you post the info someone will try to find out for you but they have probably been mistranscribed.

John

John Report 3 Feb 2008 23:34

if you post their names dates of birth and places someone will have a look for you

Sam

Sam Report 3 Feb 2008 23:49

If you are certain that neither of them died, re-married or emigrated then they will have been mistranscribed.

Post some names/dates and places of birth.

you might be putting in too much information!

The place of birth often changes from census to census, so it is often better just to use the county

the year of birth can change, so always use +/- 5 years (or even +/- 10)

the name can be mispelled ... use the wild card *, eg, instead of Edward Johannsen put in Edw* Joh* ....... it might have been mis-spelled Edwin Johnnsen

name may have been mis-transcribed ......... see for mis-spelling

he/she may be using their middle name instead of their first name. Try using just the surname, birth year +/-5, county of birth

There are all kinds of reasons.

You have to think outside the box!

Put up some information, we'll all see what we can find ........ and then tell you how we found what we did! Then you will know for the future.

Try searching on any other family members listed on the returns.

Ancestry can't find the 1851 return for my g g g grandfather. Search on his wife's name and the record is there at no 1, with g g g granddad, name correctly transcribed, as head of the household.

Hit the same, with the same solution, for my wife's g g grandfather in 1871.

Real Weird.

hi Andrew and Jim,

There are 5 Thomas Leath*nd in 1851 (b Lancs/Leic/Lincs and two in Nott between 1805 and 1815). The two in Nottinghamshire are tricky to separate. One may have died Dec 1851; but is the one you are searching a lodger in the Rose household in 1871 (and therefore not dead by 1861??)

hi all if my thomas leatherland had died dec 1851 do you know where i could look for his children

Ivy

Ivy Report 4 Feb 2008 17:45

Hi Andrew,

What resources do you have? As Jim says, tracking backwards from the 1871 is the most likely to yield results for Thomas. Have you found Joseph on any later census returns?

well well well

I looked up Sara* Linek*

and came up with this one for 1861:-

1861 Census

Name: Sarah A Linekes
Age: 22
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1839
Relation: Lodger
Gender: Female
Where born: Sneinton, Nottinghamshire, England

Civil Parish: St Mary
Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary
Town: Nottingham
County/Island: Nottinghamshire
Country: England

Registration district: Nottingham
Sub-registration district: St Mary
ED, institution, or vessel: 2
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 61
Household Members: Name Age
Richard Carey 62 Head, Widower
Thomas L Leatherland 1 b.ca 1860, Sneinton, Nottinghamshire
Sarah A Linekes 22 House Keeper
Margaret Spanley 28 Lodger, Silk Winder

Address:- 31 Earl Street, St Mary

It doesn't give Thomas' relationship to the Head of the hosuehold ... but he is listed directly under Sarah A Linekes (and that could be Lineker or Linekes on image)

- is Sarah A the g-grandmother only seen on the 1871 census? If so, then Sylvia may well have found her in 1861, and in 1851 at the same address is:

Name: Sarah Ann Lincken
Age: 11
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1840
Relation: Niece
Gender: Female
Where born: Sneinton, Nottinghamshire, England

Civil Parish: Nottingham St Mary
County/Island: Nottinghamshire
Country: England

Registration district: Nottingham
Sub-registration district: St Mary
ED, institution, or vessel: 2

Household schedule number: 50
Household Members:
Name Age
Ann Carey 47 wife
Richard Carey 51 head
Sarah Ann Lincken 11 niece
Eliza Needham 4 d of lodger
Ellen Needham 28 lodger
Matilda Needham 7 d of lodger
Thomas Needham 9 s of lodger

(There are less than 20 Sar* Lin*k* individuals listed for the England census with a birth year between 1834 and 1844)

Actually, since Sneinton is in the Radford registration district, it might be worth picking up Lin*g* references as well.

Using the soundex system on Ancestry on Joseph's surname and requiring some connection with Nottinghamshire reduces the possibilities to less than 10 individuals on each census in England. Joseph disappears from view for 1861 on this search, but might be this individual from the 1871 census?

Name: Joseph Latherland
Age: 27
