I thought I would let you know how I went on with my scan. Ad-Aware detected 181 problems which I have cleaned AVG SCAN was clear. I hope everybody else was able to sort out their pc.

By the way, if these problems are intermittent, then since the adverts are changed frequently, is it just one of the adverts that has the problem attached? (Question asked in complete ignorance, I have no computer skills at all).

[Ed - Sorry Michael, just re-read - that is what you suggest - and yes, I do have pop-ups blocked at work]

Hi Keith,

Yes, in that I showed your advice to OH (in the kind of way you do when you've discovered a scratch on the car paintwork... stupidly, I think I answered "no" to whether I would like to download software rather than killing the page at the top right hand corner) - he said we do have both - he ran checks yesterday which gave us the all-clear on the home computer. (Seems likely that work is OK since Norton intercepted it). Many thanks for the help.

Has anyone taken my advice about Spybot and Ad-aware?

Glitter Baby;
said "Have sent a message to GR and wonder what their response will be."

I can predict that the response after a couple of days will be -

We are sorry you are having problems.

I was just reading a thread when exactly the same happened to me as well. It's strange that so many of us had it happen on this site. Val

Has some one reported this to genes? It's not happened to me (IE and Mcafee here) perhaps I've just been lucky. But they really need to be made aware of it.

Just logged back on and I am surprised at how many members have had problems.

Have sent a message to GR and wonder what their response will be.

M.David;
It looks like it has got into your system. I expect you will see many alarming pop-ups about faults, risks, problems, etc.

**Do not click on any of them** Close them with the X at the very top right.

I've not tried it as I don't have an infected system, but this comes highly recommended:

Just happened to me again as I logged on at home just now - fine until I tried to move away from the community success board. IE at work with Norton anti-virus stopped it; Netscape with McAfee at home took me into the Malware Alarm page just like Glitter Baby at the top of this thread. Really scary the way it demonstrates massive downloads - made my heart skip faster, despite knowing about it - thanks very much for all the tips everyone.

It's happened to me as well when I logged on earlier via Firefox on my Mac and then tried to access my messages. I was told there were 167 major system faults on my system that needed rectifying immediately.
Quit Firefox, re started the machine and ran Maintenance, which told me all was well. Have also run a full virus scan, which found nothing.
Am using Safari for now, no problems there as yet.

Tilly;

You didn't say where you saw the name 'performance optimiser'.

There are many legitimate prgrams called 'Performance Optimiser' - with an S or a Z, and a few threats. So it's difficult to say.

Run a scan on the folder containing it for a quick check.

Snap ! Me too. As I went into "Community" from the home page, NAV intercepted it and Internet Explorer crashed.

NAV history - Auto-Protect has detected Downloader

Downloader is a generic threat. The actual file is gnida(1).swf which arrived with the other flash objects from Genes Reunited. Appears to be linked with the banner advertising stuff and has hit other sites.

Just shows why you should have an active ant-virus program. AVG and NAV recommended.

Maureen, try this.
Get SpyBot Search & Destroy free, download, install it, then immunize the computer before you run a full bot check. Keep it updated and use it weekly to protect the computer.
