My gr gr grandfather Captain William Mortley was in the merchant navy from age 16 until his death in 1864. He was born 25th August 1816 at New Romney in Kent. The family moved around as his father was in the Coastguard Service. They eventually settled in Padstow in Cornwall. William's Master's Certificate of Service gives his date of death as 17 April, 1864 and his place of death as Demerera Coast. I am not sure whether he died at sea or was ashore at the time. His death does not seem to have been registered in England nor does he appear on the PRO records of deaths at sea. I have been trying to find out the circumstances surrounding his death for nearly thirty years. Any help would be much appreciated. Diane |
