John "Sparky" Sly, pianist, saxophonist and founder of Sparky's piano shop in Digbeth, Birmingham died at the age of 70 in 2005.

Born in 1935, he was raised in Kings Norton in south Birmingham and showed a talent for music in his early years.

After leaving Kings Norton School he embarked on a varied musical career. In 1953 he was the youngest member of the RAF band, in which he played saxophone, at the Queen's Coronation.

On leaving the RAF he played with many of the top bands of the 50s and 60s before founding his now famous Birmingham piano shop, first in Small Heath before moving to Digbeth.

Apart from music, his interests included local history and Shakespeare, whose life he researched.

His funeral took place at St. Nicholas' Church in Kings Norton, Birmingham.

Any information on direct family would be appreciated.
