Welcome to the boards Mark.

You could try contacting both Genevieve and Gina by clicking on their names. If they still use and can access their linked email accounts, they'll be notified that you are trying to contact them.

In the meantime, please edit your own post to remove your email address as its against the sites T&C and could lead to you receiving unwanted junk mail. This site is not 'secure' . Anyone wishing to contact you off-board can use the private messaging system

I'm not sure if anyone is still looking at this since these messages are a bit dated but if anyone is interested, I have a fairly detailed family tree of the Salmons that stayed in England, and the branch now living in Canada.

Herbert William Salmon (Genevieve's) grandfather had an older brother named George Henry Salmon. One of his sons, Frank, emigrated to Canada shortly after 1900. He is my great grandfather.

Herbert Cyril Salmon is simply listed as 'Bertie' in our family tree with siblings Harold, Beryl, and Cedric.

I'm still in touch with a few of the Salmons in England and most here in Canada. Our tree was compiled by W.H. Geoffrey Salmon and he always wondered what became of the Australian Salmons.

Should anyone wish for more info or simply to get in touch, please do reply here or end me a message.

Cheers,

Mark

I am Herbert Cyril Salmon's daughter, granddaughter of Herbert & Harrietta nee Dodson) Salmon. I just found this site and am happy to answer questions about this side of the family if I can.

There are one or two threads offering Ancestry and Findmypast passenger list look-ups - you might try them for the first emigration to Australia. There's also a Passenger Lists thread on the Records Office board which has lots of lists. I've already searched the 3/4 most likely ones, though.

I suppose this might be Herbert in NSW: marriage: 22671/1937 SALMON HERBERT CYRIL MACKAY JEAN WOOLLAHRA death: 29871/1976 SALMON HERBERT CYRIL HERBERT ALICE MAY although the mother's first name's wrong. Can't see a birth for him in NSW or Queensland, but this English birth looks promising: Births Mar 1903 Salmon Herbert Cyril Kingston 2a 435 Can't find Harry Charles Salmon in NSW, so he presumably settled elsewhere. The Queensland BMD index only goes up to 1914, but the marriage Diane found earlier may be correct. You'd need to get the cert to be sure. You can try WA and Victoria here; the other States aren't online: http://www.justice.wa.gov.au/_apps/pioneersindex/default.aspx http://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/index-search?action=getHistIdxSearchCriteria

Can you find out who married Harry Charles Salmon and when Herbert (aged 6 on passenger list in 1909) was born and whether he married? many thanks for all your help gina

I think the Salmons emigrated in the late 1800s. They came back to England and then returned to Oz. I have Herberts parents deaths in 1901 and 1907, thic could explain why they came back to England perhaps twice. Cedric was born in Oz and was listed as 2 on the passenger lists therefore this must have been the second trip back to england possiblly for their mothers death/funeral? gina

A Harry Salmon of about the right age (38) travelled to Victoria alone in 1903: http://proarchives.imagineering*com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23 (replace asterisk with dot) I can't see him on the 1901 census, though, so the marriage and children Diane found may well be correct.

Here's Harry Charles Salmon's service record, so he also enlisted in Queensland: SALMON Harry Charles : Service Number - 4349 : Place of Birth - Hampton England : Place of Enlistment - Toowoomba QLD : Next of Kin - (Wife) SALMON Mrs H C The full service record's online on the NAA site like the others.

I wonder what happened to Eliza's twin Harry? He's not on the passenger list, so he either died before 1909, or emigrated earlier, or decided not to emigrate at all.

I posted that before I saw your question - the passenger list answers part of it, and I'll see if I can find any more. I've already looked for Australian service records for Herbert and Cedric, but haven't found anything, and haven't found a death or marriage for Beryl. However, if they lived in Queensland, there won't be anything online. Cedric is presumably Cedric Laurence Salmon born Horsham 1906; a Cedric L Salmon married Jeanie H McNaught in North Sydney in 1932.

Just found the passenger list of the ship that Herbert and Harrietta went to Australia on in 1909, the Rippingham Grange: http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/downloads/Indexes/immi1884_1912/S1.pdf The passengers included Herbert, Harrietta, Harold (15) and Beryl (11), plus Herbert (6), Cedric (2), Frances Salmon (48) and Eliza Salmon (45).

Hi Gina these might be the marriages, in Queensland - you could look for Cherilyn's lookup thread - she has the CDs and can look later than 1914, which is the latest available on-line. 1913/C003543 Salmon Eliza Jane George Durant Dudman 1911/C003074 Salmon Frances Helena Thomas Miles oops, maybe not going by the ages from Mary's last post !! Looking for deaths !! Di

Hi Mary I have siblings of Herbert who i also believe went to Australia. They are Frances Elinor b.1862 and Eliza Jane and Harry Charles, twins, b.1864. All were born Hampton, England and died in Oz? Any clues as to what happened to them in Oz, marriages etc would be greatly welcomed. Thank you in advance for your help gina

If you put Harold Salmon born 1914 into the search box at the top of this page, you'll find that two people have him in their trees, and one of them has the same surname as Dora.

MaryfromItaly

MaryfromItaly Report 17 Jul 2007 20:06

Found Dora's birth: Dora Ellevsen, parents Henrich Georg Martin Ellevsen and Anna Magdaline Boysen, born 1889. According to Harold's service record, their child was called Harold Ellenson (Ellevsen?) Salmon. He was in the RAAF in WWII, but his service record isn't online yet, just these brief details: SALMON HAROLD ELLEVESEN : Service Number - 6459 : Date of birth - 03 Dec 1915 : Place of birth - TOOWOOMBA QLD : Place of enlistment - RICHMOND NSW : Next of Kin - SALMON NANCY. However, there is a reference to him on the Australian War Memorial site, and he was mentioned in dispatches: http://www.ww2roll.gov.au/script/veteran.asp?ServiceID=R&VeteranID=860364#summary1 http://www.awm.gov.au/honours/honours/person.asp?p=6459 http://www.awm.gov.au/cms_images/awm192/00310/003100897.pdf

Herbert's service record is also online. He and Harold must have enlisted together, because they have consecutive service numbers: SALMON Herbert William : Service Number - 2498 : Place of Birth - Hampton England : Place of Enlistment - Toowoomba QLD : Next of Kin - (Wife) SALMON Harietta May SALMON Harold George : Service Number - 2499 : Place of Birth - Sydney NSW : Place of Enlistment - Toowoomba QLD : Next of Kin - (Wife) SALMON Dora
