Trying to find Miles

My mother, Marion Miles, was born HARPER in 1904 in Portsmouth of Edwin Harper and Ruth Harper (nee Hunt). She was given for informal adoption soon afterwards and was known as Marion Mansfield until she married my father in 1924. I am trying to trace both sides of her ancestry as well as the place of marriage of my maternal grandparents (believed in Portsmouth) without much success. My grandfather was an electrician in H.M.Dockyard and I have a tentative connection with a Harper family in St.Austell, Cornwall, who show in the 1871 and 1881 Censuses. There is a possibility that my grandmother was the daughter of a Boot and Shoe Shop Manager in Kings Road, Southsea. Any help in my search for my "lost" ancestors will be gladly received.
