Violet's full name was Violet Winifred Rand and she was born about 1886, presumably in NZ. She was the daughter of Robert Rand and mary Ann Hazell, who married at Kidlington, Oxon., St. Mary , on 15 May 1877. and she had five siblings: Charles Cave Rand, 1877-1957; Beatrice Ellen Mary Rand, 1879; Annie Jessie Rand, 1882-1979; Alice Maud Rand, abt 1884-1948; Robert Thomas Rand, 1889-1973. Mary Ann had been previously married to Benjamin Ward. She and Robert emigrated from London on 22 August 1880, aboard the vessel "Pleione", together with Mary Ann's son Harry, from her first marriage, their son Charles and daughter Beatrice , arriving in Wellington on 28 November 1880.
You can contact me on keithtfe at yahoo.co.uk.
Mary Ann's brother William can be found in The Cyclopedia of New Zealand [Wellington Provincial District]. published 1897. as follows:-
Hazell, Wm., Farmer, Leamington Farm, Bunnythorpe. Born in 1840 in Oxfordshire, Mr. Hazell's younger days were spent first in a hay and corn merchant's, and then in various brewing establishments in different capacities, until 1873, when he sailed for New Zealand in the "Euterpe." Acting on the advice received through the Colonists' Aid Corporation, he proceeded to Feilding, subsequently going to Palmerston, where he spent two years, chiefly carpentering. Mr. Hazell now has a compact little farm, situated four miles from Feilding, and one-and-a-quarter from Bunnythorpe, with a neat homestead, standing in nicely laid out grounds. There is a good orchard on the property, and the outbuildings include woolshed, dip, etc.

Kind regards

Keith Hazell

Rand - Hazell - Baker connections?? Hi, I seem to have come to blank wall and am hoping some one out there will have some information on my ancestors. I am trying to go back on my maternal grandmothers side. She was Violet Rand (maiden name) Her parents were Robert Rand who married Mary Ann Hazell. Mary Ann had a brother William and another brother Charles. I have a newspaper clipping stating that Charles was approved by His Majesty the King to receive an annuity of 10 pounds together with a silver medal for his long and meritorious service. This is dated 1905. I believe he lived in Portishead. He had a nephew Harry Baker who was married to a Gladys and they lived in Kinsbury, Nr Tamworth, Staff. My mother used to write to her cousin Harry way back in the 1960's and early 70's. I believe he had a sister Ada, who had a daughter, Jean, who had a son Stewart who got married in Norway in 1971 . If any of this rings a bell with you please contact me. I would love to hear from you.
