My name is not Cordes but my great grandmother, born 1810, was Eliza Catherine Cordes. She married my grandfather Stephen Fellows in Rotherham in 1840. She was born in Middlesex. She had a sister called Ann who was born in Sheffield in 1817. Ann died in the Sheffield Workhouse on 11 April 1905 (which was my fathers 8th birthday). Her Parents were John Cordes and Elizabeth (nee Coxley). Last year I looked in the London Telephone Book and found one Cordes liste in Chelsea. I rang the number only to get a message that the number did not accept incoming calls. I hope this information helps your researches

Another follow-up, from across the Atlantic. My great grandfather Henry Cordes, born ca 1820, was a brother to the Eliza Catherine mentioned by David in the previous message. He married twice, first to Sophia Millard with whom he had several children and second to Jane Olive Burberry of Reigate, my great grandmother. My grandfather Henry Abner Cordes was born in Cape Town while his father was working on the breakwater project in the 1860s, and later my grandfather settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia where I was born and raised.

Hi John, I married Jamie Cordes in 1995 and I have access to his family tree. If you want me to check if we have a connection please let me know.

Regards, Julia Cordes.

Hello John, much as you may prefer to communicate by direct email it's actually against GR's message board guidelines to post personal email addresses (I know other people have also posted theirs but there are some trigger happy "board police" who may take great delight in reporting the posts).

I'd suggest you edit your post above and the one from 2008 to delete the email addresses. You could then click on Julia's name to send her a direct message with your email address.

Hi Julia,

I haven't visited the GR site for a long time. I found that I had sent you a note in October 2008 (repeated below) but haven't discovered any response. If you're still here I'd love to hear from you!
Thanks, John

I've just seen your message of 27 May 2008, in response to mine, in the "Trying to Find" board.

I've recently been doing a lot of work investigating, trying to sort out various John Cordes names in particular, in London in the first half of the 1800s. There were quite a few of them! I have learned quite a lot, but there are still lots of mysteries.

I'd like to take you up on your offer to look for possible connections in your husband's family tree. My own Cordes line is fairly well described in my web site at http://genealogy.johncordes.ca/ but the information I have on other lines isn't all posted there.

Thanks very much,

John Cordes

Thanks for the advice. I had tried to do that initially but for some reason wasn't finding the link for her name. Have found it now and have sent a message. Thanks!
