The surname O'Mahony is an anglicized form of the Gaelic Irish surname O'Mathghamhna meaning "descendent of Mathghamhna". Mathghamhna (a name derived from the Gaelic word for a bear) was a grandson of Brian Boru, one of the great independent kings of Ireland who was killed at the battle of Clontarf in 1014. The principal territory of the O'Mahony's was in West Munster, an area with which they are still most commonly associated, particularly County Cork.
