The name O'Farrell (O'Ferrall) is an anglicised version of the Irish surname Ui Fearghail. The name means 'Man of valour'and is thought to have originated around 700 ad. Ui Fearghail beacame an important sept of Annaly, whose chief seat was Longford, formerly called Longphort Ui Fearghail. ie. O'Farrell's fortress.The name appears in the Irish Fiants of Tudor Sovereigns (1521 - 1603) 359 times and also in the Annala Rioghachta Eirann (Annals of the Four Masters) 1621.
