First Listing of Withey is in 1296 and the origins is either in Somerset and Danehill, Surrey (usual surnames books in libraries). Original spelling is de la Wythye meaning of the willow. My Uncle did research our branch as part of dissertation project years ago. Apparently our lineage in this country only goes back to around 1778 when one member of the French branch decided that having his head chopped could "ruin his whole day" and arrived in Cornwall/Devon. The family history in France is, if I remember correctly, part of the Royal Dukedom of Burgundy.
