Although this name sounds French I have found no evidence of french ancestory. what I have found are many corruptions of the name . It seems that it may have originally been DARK, but when people could not write or spell, the parish incumbant wrote down his own translation of the persons regional accent. I am fairly sure that my branch of the family came from Irland originally as coal miners in west cumbria but then moved over into the Allendale valley to mine lead. |
