Muckle is a nickname from the Middle Ages. It was changed from Meikle, Meikelham, Mickle hundreds of years ago, and also has roots in Germany. In Scotland, Muckle means "much, large, great." The Meikelhams/Muckle were part of Clan Lamont of Southern Scotland. Lamont is a Norse word that means "Lawman", so we are related to the Vikings. The Lamonts are descended from a royal Irish clan, which means they migrated to Scotland hundreds of years ago. The Clan fought with William Wallace (Braveheart) at the Battle of Stirling Bridge-the one in the film, for some reason I am yet to find out, the clan including the Muckle’s fell out of favour with Robert the Bruce. As a result, land and title was taken from them. Which probably explains the lack of information in books from that day to this. The Chieftain of Clan Lamont lives in Australia today.
