Richard Report 16 Jan 2003 06:14

Does anyone have the history of the 'evolution' of our surname? As far as I know, we arrived in England with the Vikings, settling as farmers. The original name was 'Richard' or some Norse equivalent. This became 'Hick' - apparently an English 'pet name' for Richard. Through the years Hick->Higg->Higgo->Iggo. Anyone have any further info? UPDATE : My research points to the Iggos originating in Scotland, in an area west of Aberdeen. The information above was given to my parents and from what I've seen, appears to be wrong or at least partially incorrect. All the Iggos in Sheffield are apparently from one family that arrived there from further north. Searching online - I think 2 brothers arrived from the Newcastle area. UPDATE: The above is true. It seems that one man - Duncan Iggo - moved south of the border to the Newcastle area. As far as I can tell, all the Iggos in England and New Zealand are his descendants. (I spoke to some guy in Scotland who knew of the Viking connection, but wasn't so sure about the rest. I believe he was in the Merchant Navy.) UPDATE: Wish I could find out who he was - I remember him telling me that the Iggos were from Scotland and I was shocked! :) I didn't believe him, but research has proven him right.
