I looked at those other names too and ruled them out. I think you may have the answer now.

On further reflection, I am 99.9% sure he's the right one.

My James was the only child of that exact name born 1853-56.

There were a James Buffon in Dudley, and a James Buffin in London, both born 1854, but both were still alive after 1880.

Still no proof that he's the right man, but it's a good possibility.

I can't see him anywhere else after 1871, and the one in York doesn't seem to appear anywhere before his death - so they may well be one and the same.
