I need help. I am trying to find the correct parents for Martha Hannah Sutcliffe born 27th May 1887 in Halifax. I have found the right family on the census for 1891. at 27 Lombard Street Halifax, her correct siblings are James Martha and Clara. Her father is William sutcliffe age 39 so Birth around 1852 in halifax and her mother is Mary Hannah Sutcliffe also 39 so same year of birth, on that census. However I cannot find a marriage that matches for a William Sutcliffe and a Mary Hannah( so can't find Mary's maiden name) I have only found one wedding for a William Sutcliffe and a Mary Hannah Feber but this is incorrect because their children are not correct. Any Help would be great. On the 1891 Census living with them is an Elizabeth Beniss?? age 35 sister in law but I dont think that can be the correct spelling and can't find a link. Thank you. ( Martha Hannah Sutcliffe definitely married George Clark 1913 and fathers name is William)

Thank you so much Erika.
Thank you for the reference to GRO Site. I did not know you could search in that way I thought you could only order Certificates on GRO ( What a help this is, I have been doing Family History for years and this would have been a godsend) and I couldn't find the wedding on Ancestry just with William Sutcliffe and the Christian names Mary Hannah so thanks. I thought the name must have been wrongly transcribed for Elizabeth but had tried all sorts! without finding Binns.
I am unsure about James as on the 1891 census for William and Mary there is a James Sutcliffe age14 and it says son so not sure who he is! He would have been born around 1877 so I will need to do a bit more research. Muriel who is the daughter of Martha Hannah could not remember an Uncle James but she is 104 so I thought she may have forgotten him! Thank you so much for the information I am now back on track.to find out more about William and Mary.

Odds are that William was married before he married Binns, and that James is a product of that union.
Remember that relationships on censuses are to the HEAD……….not to anyone else.

Hi alviegal, The 1881 census is a different family, I had seen that at worked throughout it but none of the names match further back. but thanks. The marriage and the 1921 census is correct for Martha Hannah and family.
Erika - I thought William may have been married before so am searching that to try and find any details. Also There are so many James Clarkes born in Halifax around the same time. I believe James did marry a Martha Wright and they had a daughter Doris as on the 1901 census living with Williams and Mayr is James widower and doris age 3 granddaughter.Martha sutcliffe(nee wright ) died 1900. I am doing more searching. Thank you both.

Argyllgran- Sorry I made a mistaken thought it was alviegal put the 1881 census on. I made a bigger mistake by saying it was incorrect.!!!
I had researched William and a marriage to Elizabeth Crowther but could not see any correct connection so ending up starting again. Huge mistake your highlight made me look again and it is the correct family . The son James is from that marriage and I had also downloaded the wedding detail of William and Elizabeth and bizarrely Mary Hannah Binns( his second wife) is a witness at Williams first wedding!!! Luckily I kept all the download and notes so can go back to plan one. Sometimes without some certificate to back up and family member that has any detail you can lose all the correct track, so thank you for the info to get me back there again. Im glad family History still remains so exciting!!!! Thanks
