William Carter. 1805 - 1880.

Carol Report 15 Nov 2019 01:40

Thank you Kathleen. I also think it's too early to be my Louisa who was born in/about 1804 and died in 1848. She married William Carter who was also born at around the same time and died in 1880.

These names and dates all fit because of the children of the marriage.

I'm wondering if the earlier Louisa Judkins was my Louisa's grandmother? I'm sure there's a connection there somewhere anyhow.

William and Louisa Carter are my 3rd gt grandparents. One of their children was Charlotte Carter (1836-1918). Charlotte married (1855) George Rollinson (1826-1893). They are my 2nd gt grandparents. One of their children was Kate Rollinson (1875-1962). She married Robert Rowland (1876-1941). She was my gt grandmother and I vaguely remember her but I was only about 4 at the time (1955). We lived over 300 miles away at that time so it was the only time I did meet her when we visited Sheffield. I've got a beautifully embroidered smoking cap belonging to my Gt Grandfather Robert Rowland. We've also spent many hours visiting graveyards where my relatives are buried in Derbyshire. St Anne's in Baslow in particular. I've "nailed" that part of my heritage. lol

Robert and Kate had several children and one of them was Robert Arthur Rowland (1897-1962) who was my Grandfather. I also only met him once and have only just realised that he died in the same year as his Mother did. She spent her last days on a geriatric ward of the local hospital. I've got a sepia Christmas card which she sent to my parents shortly before she died. She was my Dads grandmother and cared very much for him but couldn't alter how his parents behaved towards him. I believe that he spent a short time living with his grandparents while his parents fought! He never talked about his past life until he came to visit us in his later years and we took him to all the places he remembered as a boy. Sad story anyhow.

Robert Arthur Rowland married Doris Bradshaw (my grandparents) and they had my Dad......Robert Walter Rowland (1924-2012). Shortly after that marriage they separated and went their own ways and my Dad eventually married and re-located to the other end of the country (Plymouth) where I was brought up along with my elder sister and younger brother (now also deceased).

There's only me and my sister left now (her B 1948 and me 1951). We both married and have 5 children between us and 12 grandchildren.
This is why I want to get a good family history together so that if and when they get interested in their heritage they will have a good start to their discovery trail. My niece is already very interested but her hectic work life prevents her actually doing what I'm doing now. I think it's something very nice to leave to the younger generations anyhow and I'm thoroughly enjoying researching even if it's taking me a while to do. I'm getting there. ;-)

My parents never talked about their family life because neither of them had a very good time. My Dad left home as soon as he could and went to war at a dubious age! WW11 and he was stationed in Belgium where he met my Mum and shortly after the war ended they married and he brought her back to England where eventually they re-located to Plymouth where I was born and bred but somehow I ended back in Yorkshire where he was born.

Tracing my Mums side of the family has been very much harder and I have to accept that I can only go back for the couple of generations that I've got sketchy information for. I never met my grandparents on that side of the family which is sad but back in the days of my youth we didn't have the wonderful tools that are available to us nowadays.

Thank you for all your help so far anyhow. No doubt I'll be popping back up with more requests for help as I continue my journey. I've done pretty well though and on some branches I'm back in the early 1700's. Some of the Rowland clan track back to the plague of Eyam. I'm not sure they are directly connected or cousins etc. The name is common. ;-)

Thank you so much to both of you for taking your time to help me. I've come across many of the names above including "Judkin" which I believe was used as a middle name for one of the boy children but was also the maiden name of his Mother.
I think I'm going to have to look further into both all of the children of Louisa and William along with siblings.

I'm currently filling in a 10 generation chart for my sister and to say I'm not a patch on you very knowledgeable people is an understatement but I'm not doing too bad.
I never imagined for a minute just how quickly my journey would spread or just how fascinating it is.

William did originate from London and I believe Louisa was from Northampton. They both ended up in Chesterfield where they died. Louisa was only in her early 40's.

I still can't find anything on the census records but with all the names that you've given above (which are also a lot of the names I've come across) I intend to look carefully at each one again.

Hope this makes sense? Thank you.

;-)

(Can't find a Baptism for Louisa, wondered if Judkin/s was also Judson etc. at one time, checked on Ancestry also, they have the images on their Northamptonshire Collection)

(notes if her Brother George posted above, he is in Walgrave 1841, also has a Daughter named Louisa)

I assume that you have found them on at least the 1841 Census, and William on later ones.

You can use the names of children born after 1837 to discover the mother's maiden name by going to the GRO Index, which is free although you hve to sign up with it.

Go to Order Certificates Online, then Register or Log In

Then choose Search the GRO Indexes

I believe William was my 3rd Gt Grandfather. I think he was born in the London area but died in Chesterfield. He married Louisa (?) 1806-1848. They were the parents of Charlotte Carter 1836-1918. She was my 2nd Gt Grandmother. There were also 5 other children.

I can't find any information as to who the parents of both William and Louisa were (my 4th Gt Grandparents).
I would really appreciate any help here. Thanks in anticipation.
