I haven't gone to bed yet and it's nearly 2 am !!! I've been looking over what Maddie posted with James Wood and Elspet Howie and it looks pretty solid when you cross reference all the Mains of Hatton [which I believe is Smiddyseat near Turriff] births and then when Robert and Ann had Robert, the father was in Smiddyseat as ArgyllGran has shown. So unless something disproves it - I'm thinking James and Elspet are the parents of Robert 1824 [who I have been calling Robert 1 as there are another 4 after him in the family tree - my dad being Robert 5!!!]

And as for the death certificate [which hopefully confirms all this, it looks like I have to become a member [I am paying for soooo many memberships at the moment as each has a niche area you can't get anywhere else...] Except I have a contact in Mount Gambier South Australia in their local history office who may be able to get this info [she has been away on holidays and is due back over the next few days; so I'll try to contain myself and wait a few more days [to avoid another membership for just one record]
I'll let everyone know how I got on.
Any other tips...Including for the trip dad and I are making later this year to Aberdeenshire, will also be gladly received!!! [and if there may be a living relative...maybe from that tree on ancestry Maddie?]

The tree on ancestry posted by Maddie has Elspet Wood dying in 1858. I had a look at it because I'm awful nosey :-D and she was the widow of James. Her parents were James Howie, miller (deceased) and Catherine MS MacDonald (deceased). She died on 8th April at Arnhead, Auchterless and the informer was James Duguid, occupier. She was buried in Inverkeithing, which is strange as it is in Fife.
According to the tree, James Duguid is her son in law.
