I think it is essential to buy the certificate. There will always be a doubt that this is the correct Thomas if you don't.
The certificate will give you his father's name and occupation, which will confirm, or not if the census records are correct, and hence the correct family.
It will also give you Thomas' age and his occupation, which will confirm, or not, if the military records are him.

If your friend does buy a copy, please post the information from it onto this thread, I would be interested to know if the information found is correct, or not.
Thanks

Terence

Once again I thank all you researchers for the information you have given and I will pass this on to my friend for him to look deeper in to the past and maybe purchase that wedding certificate we talked of earlier.

All the best,Terry L.

We should point out that the vast majority of records from 1922, including WW2, are still with the MOD. It is possible to purchase a copy at a cost of £30. You'd certainly need a copy of his death certificate & know which branch he served in.

I don't have an account with findmypast anymore so could someone look up Thomas on WW2 Military records please.

Catherine's version from Ancestry is correct when looking at the original.

FMP has been transcribed wrongly in that it's a line out.

Thomas has been wrongly given Elfreda's DOB and occupation and she has the DOB and occupation of the person on the line below , the next door neighbour !

Have reported and asked how many other lines have been wrongly transcribed.

found on following site, could be interesting.

http://www.newmp.org.uk/article.php?categoryid=100&articleid=111&displayorder=40

1939-45 Military and Civilian names beginning with S
Extracted from the Northern Daily Mail by the late S F Reed 31/05/2019

Smallwood T. Gunner 4/11/1944, message home on film, Travellers Rest, West Hartlepool, page 2, Column 5

looks to be Thomas, on film, maybe possible to view somehow?

Article in paper says:-

An army welfare film of Durham men in Burma, recording messages to their wives and relatives, was screened at Sunderland yesterday by Capt. J.Anderson, Army Welfare Officer for the Sunderland area. Amongst those who stepped forward and gave messages were (here there are other soldiers named, then)
Gnr T Smallwood, Travellers Rest Hotel, West Hartlepool.
The major of Sunderland presented each next of kin with a 'still' and also a negative from which to make other prints.

This Thomas is Thomas H. and original gives his dob as 1 May 1915, so looks as though it is not correct Thomas.

Mary Smallwood 1/12/1914 left new York arrived Southampton 10/10/1955 her address was Travellers Rest Hotel Hartlepool occupation Hotel Manageress

Thomas Smallwood of 43 Queensbury Avenue died 15/3/1994 he was born 24/10/1913,I can't find him in 1939!

A tree on ancestry has Thomas with same date of birth and death, he was born North Yorkshire registered V9d P919 in Guisborough to Thomas Smallwood 1878-1934 in the police force in 1911 and Mary Flanigan born Middlesborough 1876-1942

1939 Mary Smallwood born 17/9/1876 (Mother to Thomas 1913)
Hotel licensee
Travellers Rest Hartlepool
Josephine Smallwood born 1915 married a Mr Joyce
Kathleen Flanigan born 1883

So it seems to be the correct Thomas who married Mary Caden in 1940 do you agree?
