Ellen -

Father Edward??
In your opening post you said his father's name was Thomas.

Ellen

Ellen Report 6 Feb 2019 10:07

Thank you all of you wonderful people
I am leaning towards parents Edward & Mary,I know his father was Edward as stated on the Marriage certificate
I looked on FMP but nothing there,I wonder if he was in the Canadian,British Regiment?
I found someone on Ancestry that has Edward as the son of Edward & Mary Smitten but no further information on him,I have emailed them waiting on a reply
Cheers Ellen

Never mind.

That record you posted, Catherine -

here again for ease of reference:

Edwd Harris
in the Canada, British Regimental Registers of Service, 1756-1900
Name: Edwd Harris
Age: 21
Birth Date: abt 1803
Birth Place: Elham, Kent
Military Date: 17 Jun 1824
Unit: 12th Foot Soldiers

Height: 5' 7"
Fair complexion, grey eyes, brown hair.
Attestation at Bury St Edmunds on 17 June 1824.
For What Period of Service: Life.
Promoted to Corporal: 26 June 1928.

No other info on it.

If that's him, he could have been a sergeant by 1840, I suppose.

Catherine

Catherine Report 5 Feb 2019 21:45

Ellen posted that Edward was

'Serjeant of the 12th Regiment of Foot '

that's why I thought that the record I posted may be him.

I don't have an account with findmypast anymore but maybe someone else has and could take a look on there to see if there is any further info.?

I think it's UL, Sylvia.

Possibly standing for Unlimited (??) , as it's in the column headed "For What Period of Service".

EDIT:

Yes, in fact, if you look at page 2 of the image, there are entries of both Limited and Unlimited.

It might be possible to find discharge papers for him, which might say why he was being discharged.

The only additional info you can hope for is his baptism which MAY give you his mother's first name

You may not even be able to find out where he was born, as he isn't on a census

Dying of "decline" could mean pretty much anything undiagnosed - just that he got weaker and died.

He was 36 when he died, so born c 1804.

Death:
HARRIS, EDWARD 36
