Many thanks Kense! This certainly ties everything regarding age / dates etc. A great find!

Will have a think on this one.....

Thanks also for the Moses Hickman entry too......

Kense

Kense Report 8 Oct 2018 18:42

Moses Hickman son of John Hickman, a carpenter, baptised 1769 Sep 24th at Chelmsford.

Kense

Kense Report 8 Oct 2018 10:16

For information the other Finch baptisms at Brentwood around that time were:
22 Mar 1782 Samuel son of James & Elizabeth
13 Mar 1788 Frederick son of James & Elizabeth
Oct 29 1790 Sarah daughter of George & Ann

Kense

Kense Report 7 Oct 2018 20:19

I have found a baptism for a Henry Finch at Brentwood (St Thomas of Canterbury) on 27 October 1782. Parents are John & Ann Finch.

There is a brother James baptised on July 12 1785, and three other Finches baptised in that decade but with different parents.

Unfortunately there are no records for marriages in the period 1753-1837 apart from some incomplete transcripts available in the Essex Record Office.

The record for the Henry Finch baptism is SEAX ref D/P 362/1/2 Image no. 36.

You are correct ArgyllGran. Nothing totally proved in this case but I take the decision to 'accept' this William Finch b1765 as my ancestor.

If I am wrong, then I am wrong. Entirely my fault if I am. Of course I take it with a pinch of salt.

It just feels right. With the Hickman connection coming from the same sort of area...

Thanks Kense for your information too

I can't add to the Henry Finch mystery but on the other branch, the Sandon parish register has the marriage of Moses Hickman.

8th November 1791, by licence, Moses Hickman bachelor of Sandon to Elizabeth Shuttleworth spinster of Chelmsford, witnesses Eliza Hartley and John Rolfe. John Rolfe was a witness to all the weddings on that page.

The next wedding in the book was John Finch and Margaret Polley in November 1791.

The actual wording of Martha Hickman's baptism is:
Martha Mary the daughter of Moses Hickman by Elizabeth his wife was half baptised at home (being ill) September 17th 1792. Received at church October 24th 1792.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 6 Oct 2018 09:39

That's assuming that Henry from Margaretting is the correct one.
There's no proof!

Thanks ArgyllGran for the info......

Another bit solved!

In view of the fact that he had a son named Augustin, perhaps this is William (Henry's father)'s christening?

William Finch

Name William Finch
Event Type Christening
Event Date 13 Nov 1765
Event Place , Margaretting, Essex, England
Gender Male
Father's Name Augustinus Finch

And maybe a brother:

ArgyllGran

But John 1811 and Mary 1812 could be the children of William 1785, and therefore nephew and niece of Henry.

Possibly William 1785's marriage:

Thanks ArgyllGran. So, it appears that Henry from Dover isn't the one at this present time.

Malyon, thanks for finding that entry for me.

So, this leaves us at the moment with Henry from Margaretting, Essex.

Does this Henry, son of William Finch, have any siblings ? And what is his mother's name?

Kense

Kense Report 4 Oct 2018 15:02

In the 1841 census ages should have been rounded down to the nearest multiple of five for those over 15. That explains the age discrepancy in the previous post.

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 3 Oct 2018 22:37

This looks like Malyon's Dover Henry in 1851 - so not your Henry, Marcus..

By coincidence, he's a carpenter

Marcus

Marcus Report 3 Oct 2018 17:17

Thanks everyone for replies so far!

I personally think that Henry was born in Essex rather than Middlesex but have never been sure, but the Chelmsford / Sandon is a strong possibility. Just a hunch on my part, nothing else.

ArgyllGran, your last post about Margaretting seems possible, even though 5 years out.

Malyon, date wise it fits, but Dover? Possible as people did move around a lot for work etc.....

Yes, Martha remarried to James Lamberth / Lambuth.

Thanks again!
