Find Ancestors

I wonder if there is a record of merchant crews, which might help define a birthplace in Norway.

Don't know if this will be of any help but there is a list of Norwegian surnames here:-

Keep scrolling down as there are pages of them but you might find a name that is similar to what is written.

It may also be difficult for you as according to the same web page it says this:-

"If you have a Norwegian last name, you find it a little difficult to trace your family history back further than a few generations. That's because before 1923, the most common last names in Norway ended in -son, -sen, -dotter, or -datter, which mean "son of" or "daughter of," and changed with each generation. So Carl Johanssen is Carl, son or Johan. But Carl's daughter Anna might be Anna Carlsdotter.

In 1923, the Norwegian government mandated all Norwegian families to choose a last name they could pass down from generation to generation. Families either stuck with their current patronymic last name, but some chose the farm or other place they lived."

Well Austin Q and everyone else who’s helped me I have the copy of the original marriage certificate between Elizabeth Ann Carter and Andrew Olsen and unfortunately it looks as though it does say Ulster Olsen ( or Wolsen as it’s written). There are no other details about where he comes from and I wonder if they just wrote what they thought his name was, as it doesn’t sound very Norwegian.
I haven’t any idea what to do now as most of the Norwegian sites need a town of origin or something. I’ve put in Ulster Wolsen and Olsen and Andrew Olsen and Wolsen but no joy.
Has anyone got any ideas of how I can proceed now and find out more?

The trouble is, no matter which website you use, we don't know his year of birth, not which part of Norway he came from, nor his father's name - and there are a lot of Andrew Olsons!

Ancestry and FamilySearch both have a lot of Norwegian records - many in Norwegian, but fairly easy to figure out what they say.

Andrew Olson, John Thompson and Charles Poold, seamen belonging to the merchant barque Psyche, now lying in Portsmouth Harbour undergoing repair, all pleaded guilty to a charge of willfully disobeying the lawful commands of Daniel McDermott, the master, on Wednesday last by refusing to haul in the slack of a warp and also to keep watch. They now expressed their determination not to go to sea in the ship which is bound for Mauritius, stating her not to be seaworthy. They were each sentenced to seven days imprisonment with hard labour

As there are several Andrew Olson, I think you need his 1862 marriage certificate to be sure of his father's name

As he was a mariner, perhaps he wasn't actually at home in 1871, but Elizabeth just put him on the list anyway ???

If the information above is correct (it seems to be but you would need his marriage certificate to confirm) then Charles/ Frederick was from Hampshire- however, his Grandfather was from Sweden: This is the family in 1881.

The above marriage is a transcription- I don't see the original to check Andrew's father's name. I don't see Ulstier as a name (perhaps a verson of Allister/ Ollister?)- you need the original marriage cert to see if this is an accurate transcription.

You could start by buying a copy of his marriage certificate, this should give you his father's name and occupation, which could help find information, or confirm any information already found.
