Marriage date required but both ancestors are deseased

On the 1939 register it usually says the date of marriage, but in this case it says that the marriage took place "prior to 4-8-49......(the 4 could be a 6)

Certificates will cost £9.25 and can be ordered from
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
using the references given earlier.

The only other alternative is tracking down and, if permitted, searching through books of parish records. That would be one for each Church or Chapel. Even then, if they married in a Registry Office, you could be out of luck.
