CH - I remember posting on Mr Cheyne, a schoolmaster who taught on Fair Isle and Foula Is in Shetland.

Whilst I was rummaging around on Shetland, I was interested to see some 1800-ish use of the paternalistic naming pattern which still predominates in Iceland, so if William Smith, say, has a daughter, she'ld be called Elizabeth Williamsdaughter, say, which might be written as Elizabeth Williamsdr. It wasn't the common pattern, but I did come across soome instances in Dunrossness psh.

What I was trying to do here was narrow down the window for your Bella's emig'n.

HOWEVER, I'LD NEED ANCESTRY OR FMP TO CHECK CENSUSES AFTER 1861, AND I DON'T HAVE A SUB.

I suspect your Bella went out alone - she could have had a sib with her, or followed a sib.
If you can use the census to get a better idea of when her parents died (and if they moved from Keith), then I think it would be worthwhile purchasing the images of their death rego's - these would name your Bella's grandparents, and might name a maried sister if she were an informant.

Roy Report 13 Aug 2017 04:19

I am trying to find out about the passage to New Zealand for these two persons. James was born in Forfarshire on 7/8/1845 and Isabella was born in Banffshire in 1847. They were married in 1880 in Lyttlrton, New Zealand so obviously must have travelled to NZ before this date. James was the son of Thomas White and Elisabeth Nicol and Isabella was the daughter of William Thom(p)son and Isabella Cowie.I have no details of the deaths or buriel places of Thomas or Elisabeth so do not know if they travelled to NZ or not. The same goes for James siblings, I know they were all born in Forfarshire but I again do not where they died or were buried. Any help would be appreciated.

Roy Horwell, New Zealand.
