Hi folks

Though I've been doing this for a while, I still seem to come up with the odd stumper. So here goes....

Mary Ann Crew (born 1852, Hanham, Gloucstershire) married George Hawkins (1851-89) and had 9 children betwen 1870 and 1888.

Fast forward to 1896. Her son, George Samuel Hawkins (born 1877) enlists in the Army, and names his next of kin as Mary Ann Bateman (mother).

Sometime between this date and the 1901 census, she moves from Ystrad Rhondda, South Wales, back to hir birthplace of Hanham, where we find her on the 1901 census, once again widowed, and living with her daughter Rosina (listed on the census as Rose). She is, once again, widowed.

By 1911, she is back in the Rhondda Valley, living with her widowed son, William Hawkins and his stepson, Cliffiord. At that point, she's reverted to the Hawkins surname.

One problem, though - the FreeBMD seach brings up no likely marriage to a Mr Bateman, no matter what combination of names I try.

Can anyone suggest how I can crack this nut?
