Thanks for all your thoughts.

Parents were married in 1837, first child born 1838.

Josiah was a merchant so did not have an employer. He had money problems and was declared bankrupt in 1852.

Possibly the original certificates were lost as has been suggested.

Dea, I thought you had possibly cracked it with the wrong name being given for the father but the original records show his correct name, Josiah was written. The transcriber appears to have made the mistake. I also found a third record for Adelaide. This is the same one that has father 'Joseph' so has been correctly transcribed this time.

Name Adelaide Mary Brockwell

Thank you all anyway. I guess I'll never really know why this happened. <3 <3

it could be they were baptised twice because the fathers name was wrong on the first baptism

Maybe it is in the name - I note that the first baptisms were to JOSEPH and Jane and the second to JOSIAH and Jane - either they are diffent couples or maybe they used the wrong name at first and felt the need to correct it ??

One of mine was baptised twice because the school he attended wanted proof of his age. He was born shortly before registration was compulsary and baptised the second time when he was about 8.

I can only assume that they'd lost the certificate of baptism, if one ever existed. Perhaps the same occured here? In addition, some employers wanted proof that their workers were 'christian' or at least morally upstanding. Quite often their children were baptised in bulk.

Were they born before the marriage??

Was one baptism a non-conformist one??

Did they have a change of faith??

Just some thoughts............

Yes she was just baptised once as were all the other siblings. Can't understand why Adelaide and Alice would be baptised twice though.

I see a third sister was also baptized the same day in 1851. She was Julia Louisa born 17 April 1849.

Would anyone have any idea why a person would have two baptisms?

I have Adelaide who goes through one baptism and then a few years later gets baptised with 2 sisters. They are the same person born 31 Dec 1846 ( the date is on the record) to Josiah, a merchant, and Jane of 40 Dorset Square.
