We can't find it, Andy - nor the earlier thread about Rosanna, which I'm sure I worked on, as is Eringobragh.

I can't find a previous thread about these McKennas in Maghera. Could someone please advise where it is. Many thanks, Andy.

Andy Report 16 Dec 2016 20:36

I posted in the past asking about regiments at the East Pier Fort when George was there. Maghera, Derry would be news to me. But Maghera, Derry could well be the place name that I cannot decipher in the hand-written parish record. In fact having had a look just now, I'm sure it is! That is brilliant, I hadn't even looked at the McKenna's....... thank you.

Hi AustinQ,

I don't have George's birth details. He has been a brick wall for a long time because he never appeared in any records in his own right, just referenced in other people's and not on any censuses.

The marriage record just says he is of full age!

Oh yes, thanks Potty, I think I misunderstood Andy's post.

Andy, when was George born?

Potty

Potty Report 16 Dec 2016 12:52

John must have the Civil Reg for the marriage as well as the Parish Record.

Perhaps I'm not looking at the same entry?! But looking at the original of this on Ancestry I don't see where butcher has been added.

Hi All,

Thanks for taking the time to have a look into my Power ancestors.

Here is the link to Waterford History website where I found the directory info. There are a number of John Powers but I was looking for one who was a butcher or similar -

http://waterfordhistory2.tripod.com/1877_directory_h_l.htm

Eringobragh1916, I found the Power/McKenna marriage on Ancestry's Irish Catholic parish registers with George Power's parents shown as Johni and Helenae Power from Waterford. The marriage record has the added detail of John's trade.

Best regards,

Andy.

The photo commissioned by Mr Powers is only to View at the NAI....

There was a Mr Smythe who was part of Britain and Argentina Meat Co. (Butcher) in Waterford but that was later than 1905/6

Still cannot pick up the marriage on the Civil Reg. site Dublin...will have another browse around.....

Andy....I cannot find the Marriage.....where did you find it.?

Andy

Andy Report 14 Dec 2016 23:25

Hello,

I wonder if you can help me find out more about my ggg-grandfather, John Power?

John's son George married Roseanna McKenna in Dun Laoghaire on 9th June 1872. George was recorded as a Soldier living at the East Pier Fort, and Roseanna was a dressmaker living in Wellington Street.

In the parish record of George's wedding his parents are named as John and Helen Power of Waterford and John’s occupation is Butcher.

I have found an 1877 trade directory of Waterford that lists a John Power, fish and game dealer, at 55 High Street, Waterford. But can't connect this John to George, and don't know whether a fish & game dealer is the same as a butcher?

Any help would be gratefully received as I have run out of ideas. Thanks in advance for any help.

Best regards,

Andy
