Sylvia, thank you for your comments.
That is my understanding too, ie. that a husband's name name could quite possibly be included on a child's birth certificate, no matter what the circumstances

As I mentioned, this is not my tree, but my friend has now made contact with someone closer to the family group and they know who is the reputed fathers of each of Winifred's children,so my friend is working with them to clarify the situation.

malyon ............

Ordering the birth certificate will not necessarily show who the father was.

The husband of a married woman is assumed to be the father of all children she bears, unless the Registrar has been told otherwise .............. and this applies even if the husband has been dead for 10 years, as I once found.

Ergo, if Winifred was bearing children fathered by both Charles and George while Charles was still alive ......... the birth certificate will almost certainly show Charles as the father.

but was she with Charles till he died in 1936
you would have to order all the birth cert to find who the father was

Malyon,

Thanks for your input.

Interesting situation, when it's not apparent from the index, just who the father was of each child.

Thank you for that Prickly Holly... that makes more sense.

Friend is having fun sorting out which of 2 brothers fathered each of Winifred's many children.
She married both brothers, but let's just say there could well be an 'overlap' !!

The schedule number for the Gash family is 28

As posted by Pam the family are numbered 1, 2 and 3.

The next schedule number is 29 at Dean Dairy.

There would appear to be 6 closed records on the same schedule as the other Gash family members - probably your missing children.

Thank you Pam.

I am helping a friend and we expected to see some other children there too, but that is the correct family.

Many thanks.

Please would someone check details for Winifred GASH and family in 1939.

She was possibly with a George GASH, maybe in Winchester area or near Petworth, West Sussex

She was the widow of George's brother.
